I’ve been there before.
A list of 20 things I am now going to do every single day to get myself back on track.
Some of these herculean tasks include:
Fighting a bear while saving a baby out of a burning building
Solving world hunger
Curing cancer
Inventing a new renewable energy resource
Quitting porn for the rest of my life
And let me tell you, when I do not achieve these tasks, it sure does upset me. Oftentimes I find myself in a bad mood and I often question if these goals are possible. It’s a real morale killer.
Okay, now at this point, I hope you understand that these are exaggerations to make a point, well at least most of them.
In all seriousness though, I’m sure that I am not that only one who can reflect back and laugh sometimes at all the weight I was stacking on the bar, thinking that I would lift it and realizing with shock that I am about to get crushed the moment the weight comes off the bars.
In the realm of recovery, this can be disheartening and this feeling of failure can keep us in the perpetual cycle of porn use because we begin to believe that it is not possible to live a life free of it.
What’s taken me decades to realize is that simplicity is key and that perfect can be the enemy of good. And perfect, as we define in today’s culture, is immediate results and immediate gratification. This expectation is both unrealistic and unachievable.
I firmly believe that recovery is a lifelong endeavor and recovery is life. Life is not going to be perfect, but it can be good.
By adjusting your expectations to be more realistic and simplifying your daily habits, you will see some good in your life.
One quick and easy way to keep your expectations realistic and to simplify your daily habits is to set SMART goals.
Below is a useful article written by Mind Tools which breaks down what SMART goals are and how to incorporate them in your life.
I think this will be a beneficial read that will help you in your daily recovery.
Remember that perfect is the enemy of good.
