When I was going through the toughest time of my life a couple of years ago, Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl was a God-send. Frankl survived the Holocaust in a concentration camp and went on to found a ground-breaking method of psychology called Logotherapy, with it’s focus on meaning as the primary driver of human life.
Frankl believed that even in the worst imaginable circumstances, we can endure suffering if we find purpose within it. Logotherapy (from logos, Greek for "meaning") teaches that our deepest motivation is not pleasure (as Freud proposed) or power (as Adler proposed), but the search for meaning.
What impacted me most was Frankl’s idea of the “last of the human freedoms”:
the ability to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances.
That simple yet profound truth helped me reframe my pain, not as meaningless suffering, but as something I could face with courage and purpose.
In my darkest days, that perspective became a lifeline in my time of suffering.
Choose Your Attitude
Bad things and terrible circumstances aren’t unique.
We all have our problems.
Some self-inflicted.
Some forced upon us.
Some fair.
Some unfair.
Some egregious.
Some minor.
No one escapes life unscathed.
Not faith.
Not money.
Not politics.
Not race.
Not health.
We face:
Death.
Addiction.
Unforeseen Accidents.
Health Emergencies.
Global chaos.
Stress.
Financial ruin.
Prejudice.
Most of us will taste at least one. Many will face them all.
The question is not “Why me?”
The real question is:
How will you respond?
How did Viktor respond to his hardships?
How did he respond to what many would agree was the worst human predicament imaginable?
He chose purpose over despair.
He chose dignity over dehumanization.
He chose to serve others even when he had nothing himself.
He found meaning in the suffering.
And that choice gave him life, both during the camps and after.
We may not choose our suffering, but we can always choose our response and pursue meaning.
And in that choice lies the power to reclaim our life, no matter the circumstance.

Every day this week, notice one situation where you’re tempted to react automatically (stress, frustration, temptation, etc.).
Pause.
Breathe.
Ask yourself:
“What is the response that aligns with the person I’m becoming?”
Write down your choices at the end of each day. Small wins build the muscle of intentional living.
Closing Thoughts: Freedom is Found in Your Attitude
Your mind can be a minefield or a masterpiece in progress.
The difference lies in whether you react or respond.
Remember: You can’t always control what happens to you, but you can always control how you show up in it.
